A museum-quality and extremely rare Frisian silver ornamental spoon with a fully documented history.
This beautiful spoon was crafted in 1847 by the renowned silversmith Hessel Adema from Leeuwarden. Thanks to its detailed engraving, this masterpiece offers a unique insight into a 19th-century Frisian life story.
The twisted handle of this spoon is crowned at the end with the detailed cast symbolic figures of 'Faith and Hope' (Fides and Spes), traditionally depicted with the cross and the anchor. The transition from the handle to the generous, oval bowl is adorned with a finely cast ornament.
The back of the spoon bowl features a beautiful, hand-engraved authentic inscription:
"Wypkje Sjerps Kaastra was born on November 26, 1825"
Extensive genealogical research in the archives of Tresoar confirms the fascinating life story behind this inscription (possibly given on the occasion of her marriage in 1849, shortly after the spoon was made in 1847):
  • Birth: Wypkje Kaastra was born on November 25/26, 1825, in Leeuwarderadeel as the daughter of Sjerp Tjeerds Kaastra and Jeltje Meins Jongbloed (registered on November 28, 1825).
  • Marriage: On January 24, 1849, she married Douwe Banda in Leeuwarden.
  • Death: Wypkje passed away on May 6, 1916, in Leeuwarden at the respectable age of 90 years as a widow (registered on May 8, 1916).
The spoon is clearly and fully hallmarked with the official Dutch silver hallmarks:
  • Maker's mark: H A above the number 186 in a square, the mark of H. Adema (active in Leeuwarden between 1846 and 1851). This mark is sharply struck twice (in the bowl and on the handle).
  • Fineness mark: Running Lion with a 2 (second standard silver, .833).
  • Assay Office mark: Minerva head with the assay office letter F (Leeuwarden).
  • Year letter: The clear N, which stands for the production year 1847.
Specifications:
  • Material: 2nd standard silver (.833)
  • Maker: Hessel Adema
  • Place of origin: Leeuwarden (Friesland)
  • Dating / Year letter: N = 1847
  • Weight: 47.4 grams
  • Length: 19.1 cm (191 mm)

A rare collector's item that, due to its definitive Frisian provenance and documented lineage, is an absolute top investment for enthusiasts of historic Frisian silver and genealogy.
