An extremely intriguing collector's item for lovers of historical silver and regional artifacts.
This silver ornamental spoon, crafted around 1890, is executed in the characteristic 18th-century Frisian Baroque style. It is a beautiful example of a so-called 'historicism' spoon, made at the time to revive the glory days of old Frisian guild silver.

The spoon's handle features a twisted mid-section and is beautifully crowned at the end by the detailed cast symbolic figure of 'Love' (Caritas). She is traditionally depicted as a mother figure carrying a child in her arms, flanked by a second child at her side. The transition from the handle to the generous, egg-shaped bowl is decorated with an elegantly cast mask/ornament head.
The back of the spoon bowl is richly adorned with hand engravings and stamps that give the spoon a mysterious, historical appearance:
  • Pseudo Marks: The reverse shows three so-called pseudo marks (including a crowned letter 'E' and a coat of arms with a lion). These imitation hallmarks were applied by skilled silversmiths in the late 19th century to give the spoon an antique guild appearance.
  • Engraving: Beneath an engraved baroque crown is a cartouche with an elegant intertwining engraving and the text "Pietje Boltjes (...)" with the year 1721. This type of early commemorative engraving was often commissioned during the historicism period (c. 1890) to honor an old family tradition or lineage (or as decorative stylistic imitation).
Specifications:
  • Material: Silver (hallmarked with historic pseudo marks)
  • Place of Origin / Style: Friesland / The Netherlands (historicism)
  • Dating: Circa 1890 (with stylistic elements and engraving referring to 1721)
  • Weight: 56.4 grams (robust, heavy quality)
  • Length: 17.3 cm (173 mm)
  • Condition: In excellent antique condition with a beautiful deep patina in the recessed areas of the engravings and casting.
A magnificent showpiece for the display cabinet and a great conversation starter for collectors fascinated by the history of pseudo marks, historicism, and Frisian folk art.
