Frisian silver birth spoon, made by Age Binses Looxma (Voet 532) from Sneek. This silversmith was active from 1720 to 1759.

Age Binses Looxma was also mayor and, from 1735 to 1752, inspector-general of Friesland.

The spoon features a double-twisted handle (see Wttewaall's Dutch small silver, page 300). The spoon is crowned with a female figure holding an anchor and a dove, symbolizing Hope.

The spoon is hallmarked with the master's mark of a cloverleaf.

Engraved on the back of the bowl is: Eelke Baukes was born on June 5, 1723.

He was probably a son of Bauke Eelkes (from Langweer) and Minke Kornelis (from Sneek) who married in Sneek in 1720. Source: Collection of Baptism, Marriage, Burial, and Membership Records (DTBL) Marriage Banns Register Dutch Reformed Church Sneek 1674-1721.

Eelke married in 1749 and became a carter in Amsterdam.

The spoon is in excellent condition.

Weight: 63.4 grams. Dimensions: 4.5 x 17 cm.
