Silver Frisian Chatelaine, including P. Schmidt, Leeuwarden, 1818
Frisian chatelaine consisting of scissors, pincushion and needle case made by among others:
Hook: P. Schmidt from Leeuwarden, active from 1812 to 1846
Pincushion: Ype Staak Bru(i)nings, working in Joure. Born in 1786 and died in 1870. He was a silversmith from 1813 to 1832.
Needle case: possibly Johannes Wijngaarden, from Leeuwarden 1765-1772 (Foot 128b)
Chatelaines were worn by women with traditional costumes in Friesland.
On the skirt hook is a female figure with a pillar which stands for Fortitudo (steadfastness). The pillar / column stands for support and strength and self-control in adversity and pain.
The hook is marked with master mark PS, Minerva head, second fineness mark and date letter J for 1818.
The pincushion is marked with master mark YB, Minerva head, second fineness mark and date letter K for 1819
The scissors and sheath are both marked with the sword.
The needle case Is hallmarked with an 18th century master hallmark. Probably a bunch of grapes under a crown by Johannes Wijngaarden.
All parts hang on jasseron chains.
Total weight: 177 grams. Length: from 47 to 58 cm.
