A very special and rich antique silver chatelaine , composed of high-quality and historically significant pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries . This chatelaine forms an exceptional ensemble of religious, political, and artisanal significance .

The chatelaine features a beautiful silver mantel clock with a detailed depiction of the evangelist Matthew with the angel , a classic Christian symbol for inspiration and divine guidance.

Several original silver utensils hang on the skirt hook:

  • a silver sewing awl in holder with screw system ,
  • a silver pair of scissors ,

  • and an exceptionally rare silver needle case .

Silversmiths and origins

The scissors and the sewing awl were made by G. van Gelderen from Schoonhoven , a renowned Dutch silversmith who was active in the period 1854–1862 . Schoonhoven was known at this time as the centre of silver production in the Netherlands.

The knitting needle holder was made by ST Reitsma , active in Lemmer and Sneek from 1841 , a silversmith known for his refined utility silver from Friesland.

Unique needle case – Dirk Goedhart, Amsterdam, 1787

The absolute showpiece of this chatelaine is the silver needle case , dated 1787 and made by Dirk Goedhart from Amsterdam , an important silversmith from the late 18th century.
The needlecase shows a portrait of stadtholder William V , surrounded by the text “Vivat Oranje” .

Historical context – Patriots versus Orangists

The year 1787 marked a turbulent period in Dutch history. During this time, the Dutch Republic was under severe political tension due to the struggle between the Patriots , who sought democratic reforms and restrictions on the stadtholder's power, and the Oranjists , who remained loyal to William V and the House of Orange .
Objects like this needle case served as visible political symbols . Wearing a Vivat Oranje image was a clear expression of support for the Orangist cause, making this piece a rare example of political propaganda incorporated into luxury silverware .
