Are you looking for an absolute masterpiece in the field of historic Dutch silver and regional costume?
We are proud to present this extremely rare, complete silver chatelaine. This monumental piece of jewelry, worn on the waistband of traditional Frisian costume, unites 18th- and 19th-century mastery in one breathtaking, 3-part ensemble. A unique opportunity for the serious collector or museum collections.

This exquisitely assembled functional piece of jewelry consists of four masterful components:
  1. The Skirt Hook (1824): The base of the chatelaine is a beautifully striped, shield-shaped skirt hook. The shield is centrally decorated with an elegant, applied floral motif and is fitted on the back with the original, solid clamping bracket. Crafted by the renowned silversmith J. van den Berg from Schoonhoven.
  2. The Pincushion (18th Century): This is an absolute rarity. The heavy silver frame of the brown velvet cushion is fully openwork and displays a fabulously beautiful cartouche featuring the Dutch Maiden. She holds up the traditional liberty pole with the liberty cap. Given the style and construction, this unmarked showpiece dates from the 18th century.
  3. The Needle Case (19th Century): A slender, strictly chased case with profiled bands, which slides open smoothly. Equipped with a sturdy attachment ring and an intriguing maker's mark.
  4. The Scissors with Silver Mount: A magnificent antique pair of scissors whose silver finger holes are richly openworked with flower, leaf, and branch motifs. The iron blades still show the original, royal traces of fire-gilding and engravings.
The chatelaine is clearly and strongly hallmarked on the various parts (see the impressive macro photos):
  • Hallmarks on the skirt hook:
    • Maker's mark: I*B – Johannes van den Berg (Schoonhoven, active 1815-1837).
    • Year letter: P (for the year 1824).
    • Fineness mark: Walking lion with a '2' (Second grade silver, .833).
    • Assay mark: Minerva head.
  • Hallmarks on the needle case: Maker's mark BT under a chalice/goblet (a sought-after, unknown maker's mark from the 19th century).
  • Dimensions: Total wearable length from the top of the skirt hook to the tip of the scissors: an impressive 53 cm. Length of needle case: 9.5 cm.
  • Total weight: 186.3 grams (a very imposing and heavy ensemble).
The entire chatelaine is in completely original collector's condition. The heavy cable chains are in good condition and show no weak links, the sliding mechanism of the needle case closes perfectly, and the scissors still move smoothly. The silver possesses a magnificent, historic patina that masterfully accentuates the depth of the engravings and the openwork.
