Silver apostle spoon, Groningen, 1901

Silver apostle spoon, probably made by the silversmith R. Scheltens from Groningen. He was active from 1858 to 1889.

The spoon is hallmarked with English import marks IM for E.I. Miller, date letter e for 1900, city mark London and the sterling mark.

Also hallmarked with the Dutch sterling mark with export key and the date letter R for 1901.

The spoon is also provided with pseudo hallmarks. This was done to make a 19th-century silver spoon look like it was 18th-century. Especially from England, there was a lot of demand for 18th-century Dutch silver. Pseudo hallmarks were used to meet this demand.

The spoon has a beautifully decorated stem and is crowned with the apostle Andrew with the St. Andrew's cross.
