Are you looking for a highly intriguing and rare piece of historical European silverware?
This magnificent antique silver apostle spoon is a fantastic collector's item. The spoon combines the opulent style of historical silversmithing with the fascinating history of international silver trade in the 19th century.
The stem of the spoon is extremely detailed, cast and chased in the shape of Apostle Peter, recognizable by his traditional attribute: the key. The transition to the smooth, egg-shaped bowl is decorated with ornaments. With a length of 15 cm and a substantial weight of no less than 44 grams, this spoon feels remarkably heavy and solid in hand.
This silver object bears a very interesting combination of hallmarks that tell the story of its journey through Europe:
  • Pseudo-Hallmarks (Hanau Style): The spoon features so-called pseudo-hallmarks, including a crowned capital letter N. This type of fantasy mark was widely used in the 19th century by the famous silversmiths from Hanau (Germany) to adorn their high-quality silverware in historical (Renaissance and Baroque) styles.
  • Austro-Hungarian Import Mark (AV): The letters AV conjoined in a horizontal hexagon stand for AuslandVerkehr (foreign trade). This is the official Austro-Hungarian import hallmark for foreign silver goods.
  • Assay Office Letter B (Linz): The added letter B in the import mark indicates that the spoon entered the empire via the regional assay office in Linz (Austria).
  • Period: This specific Austrian import hallmark was used between 1872 and 1902, which precisely dates the spoon to the last quarter of the 19th century.
