Silver apostle spoon, crowned by the apostle Paul with a sword. The finely crafted cast handle is decorated with a peacock and floral motifs. The motif was imported to Groningen from East Friesland, Emden (Jan Berends, 1604).

Attached to the bin by means of a short rat tail connection.

The spoon likely originates from Friesland or Groningen and could have been made by either Harmen Baer from Winschoten (c. 1653) or Harmen Brunsvelt from Leeuwarden (active from 1605 to 1629). Documentation from that period is somewhat contradictory.

The spoon is hallmarked with two master stamps, often used to indicate a first-grade silver grade. It is also hallmarked with an unknown hallmark (cloverleaf?).

The spoon was sold to England in the 19th century and gilded there. It likely belonged to the noble Fox-Strangways family, Earls of Ilchester; the title is still used today. They had the fox crest placed on the bowl.

A museum spoon in excellent condition.

Weight: 30.8 grams. Length: 15.5 cm.
