Are you looking for a historic silver masterpiece with a monumental appearance?
This exceptionally heavy, gold-plated silver birth spoon is a masterful example of 19th-century Frisian silversmithing from Bolsward. Crafted by the renowned silversmith Lammert Fedders Wartna, this spoon exudes pure luxury and symbolism.
The finial of this spoon is an iconic and highly detailed allegorical depiction of the Dutch Maiden as Liberty:
    • She proudly holds aloft the traditional liberty pole with the liberty cap (Phrygian cap).
    • At her side stands the Dutch Lion, holding the bundle of arrows (symbolizing unity and the seven provinces).
    • Directly below this imposing depiction features a beautiful crowned coat of arms.
    • The transition from the stem to the bowl is decorated with a characteristic, three-dimensionally cast angel's head.
    • The spoon is fully fire-gilded (vermeil), which gives the silver a warm, deep-gold royal luster and accentuates the details phenomenally.

Along the edge of the deep, gilded bowl is an extremely skillful, continuous script inscription:
"1795 den 10 february is geboren Jelle Siebrands Wiarda"
Special historical detail: although Jelle was born in 1795, this commemorative spoon was forged in 1864. It is a beautiful example of a 'commemorative or family heirloom' that was commissioned later in the 19th century to honor a respected patriarch within the Frisian Wiarda family.

The spoon is clearly hallmarked on the back of the stem and in the bowl:
  • Maker's mark: LW130 – the silversmith Lammert Fedders Wartna (Bolsward, active from 1838).
  • Date letter: e (for the year 1864).
  • Purity mark: Walking lion with a '2' (Second standard silver, .833).
  • Assay office mark: Minerva head.
  • Weight: 75.1 grams (an exceptionally heavy, solid quality).
  • Length: 21 cm.
The spoon is in good condition. The fire-gilding is beautifully deep in color, the casting is razor-sharp, and the engraving shows hardly any wear. A museum-quality showpiece for the connoisseur of Frisian silver.
