Are you looking for a historic and highly atmospheric piece of silverware? This stunning antique knife with a silver handle is a fabulous example of late 19th-century craftsmanship. Decorated with a highly detailed, hand-chased allegorical scene and topped with a characterful little dog, this knife is an absolute enrichment for the serious collector of antique cutlery or small silver. 
The silver handle is crafted using a superior, traditional technique and excels in depth and relief:
  • Chased silver: The handle is hand-embossed and chased. The characteristic side seam is the undeniable proof of this authentic craftsmanship. The interior is firmly filled with traditional resin to secure the blade's tang.
  • The hunting scene: Surrounding the handle is a rich, allegorical depiction framed by classic acanthus leaves and rinceau scroll motifs.
  • The finial: The grip ends in a fabulously beautiful, three-dimensionally chased finial in the shape of a little dog. In silver history, this little dog symbolizes loyalty and vigilance. 
  • The blade: Features the original, sturdy steel blade, mounted seamlessly and tightly into the smooth, tapered silver bolster.

The knife handle is clearly and officially hallmarked on the bolster (just before the transition to the blade) (see the detailed macro photo):
  • Fineness mark & Guarantee: The Dutch "Zwaardje" (Little Sword) (the legal hallmark used for small silver objects of the second standard, .833 silver).
  • Dating: Late 19th century (c. 1880-1900).
  • Dimensions: Total length 25.0 cm (250 mm).
  • Weight: 73.3 grams (total weight including blade and filling).

The knife is in excellent, authentic antique condition. Over the decades, the hand-chased silverware has developed a beautiful deep patina, which allows the depiction to come to life fantastically. The blade is sturdy and shows normal, characterful signs of age consistent with an object of this age.
