Large silver miniature of the Weigh House in Alkmaar. Attributed to the silversmith D. J. Levert from Alkmaar. Active from 1883 to 1921.
On the bottom, it is hallmarked with the second fineness mark and the year letter D for 1913. It is also hallmarked with the Minerva head P for Alkmaar.
The origin of this building dates back to the 14th century. The Weigh House was originally built as a Holy Spirit Almshouse with a chapel. The almshouse served as a hospital for the poor, and pilgrims could stay overnight there during their journeys. The building was converted into a Weigh House in the 16th century.
This prominent building owes its appearance to the events of 1573, when the Spanish army surrounded the city. The inhabitants starved, but with the courage of despair, they managed to defeat the army.
As a reward, Alkmaar was granted weighing rights. The city was now allowed to charge weighing fees for all goods entering from outside. Alkmaar flourished as a market town. The old chapel became a market building and weigh house, with large weighing scales. These are still used for cheese. The weigh house became a showpiece of the city. In 1601, the colossal tower was completed. At 50 meters, it was a landmark in the landscape. (Source: erfgoedalkmaar)
The miniature consists of two parts. The tower can be slid off.
The miniature is in excellent condition.
Weight: 92.4 grams. Dimensions: 4 x 7 x 13 cm.
