Large silver miniature of a smock mill (cap-and-body mill) attributed to the silversmith J. Verhoogt from Hoorn. Active from 1896 to 1936.

Jan (Johannes) Verhoogt started as a knife sharpener, later specializing entirely in luxury silver miniatures. In the antique world, he became world-renowned as the specialist in windmills and sailing ships.

It concerns an octagonal smock mill. Very characteristic is the detailed gallery (the staging or walkway) with the fine silver railing halfway up the mill body.

The four sails are openwork (filigree style). The mill features a fine silver flag at the top of the cap. The cap has a functional capstan wheel at the back, which in reality could be used to turn the cap into the wind.

The mill is hallmarked with the second grade silver mark, year letter S for 1928. Also, the Minerva head A for Amsterdam is struck.

The miniature is in perfect condition.

Weight: 78.3 grams. Dimensions: 6 x 6 x 17 cm.
