Large silver miniature of a smock mill (tower mill) attributed to the silversmith J. Verhoogt from Hoorn. Active from 1896 to 1936.

Jan (Johannes) Verhoogt  started as a knife sharpener, later specializing entirely in luxury silver miniatures. In the antique world, he became world-renowned as the specialist in windmills and sailing ships.

It is an octagonal smock mill. Very characteristic is the detailed gallery (the platform or staging) with the fine silver railing halfway up the mill's body.

The four sails are openwork (filigree style). The mill is fitted with a fine silver flag on the top of the cap. The cap has a functional tailpole at the rear, which could be used to turn the cap into the wind.

The mill is hallmarked with the second fineness mark, year letter S for 1928. Also, the Minerva's head A for Amsterdam is struck.

The miniature is in perfect condition.

Weight: 78.3 grams. Dimensions: 6 x 6 x 17 cm.
