Antique silver miniature of a Dutch polder landscape with a smock mill and a horse-drawn cart made by silversmith J. Verhoogt from Hoorn. Active from 1896 to 1936.

Jan (Johannes) Verhoogt started as a knife sharpener, later specializing entirely in luxurious silver miniatures. He became world-renowned in the antiques world as the specialist in windmills and sailing ships.

It is an octagonal smock mill. Very characteristic is the detailed gallery (the 'stelling' or platform) with its delicate silver railing halfway up the mill body.

This specific model is very intricately constructed and is placed on a wavy silver base that mimics a polder landscape with a ditch and a small bridge.
To the right of the mill, a chaise (carriage) pulled by a horse rides across the silver base. The reins and harness are meticulously crafted from braided or twisted silver wire.

The four sails of the mill are openwork. The mill is fitted with a delicate silver flag at the top of the cap. The cap features a functional 'kruiwiel' (winding mechanism) at the rear, which in a real mill could be used to turn the cap into the wind.

The mill is hallmarked with the second fineness mark, year letter V for 1905, and master's mark JV hammer. The Minerva head assay mark is also present.

The miniature is in perfect condition.

Weight: 136 grams. Dimensions: 8 x 8 x 12 cm.
