Antique silver miniature of a Dutch polder landscape with a smock mill and a horse-drawn cart, made by silversmith J. Verhoogt from Hoorn. Active from 1896 to 1936.

Jan (Johannes) Verhoogt started as a knife grinder, later specializing entirely in luxury silver miniatures. In the antiques world, he became world-renowned as the specialist in windmills and sailing ships.

It is an octagonal smock mill. Very characteristic is the detailed gallery (the platform or staging) with the fine silver railing halfway up the mill body.

This specific model is very detailed and is placed on a undulating, silver base that simulates a polder landscape with a ditch and a small bridge.

To the right of the mill, a chaise (carriage) drawn by a horse rides over the silver surface. The reins and harness are very finely crafted from braided or twisted silver wire.

The four sails of the mill are openwork. The mill features a fine silver flag at the top of the cap. The cap has a functional winding wheel at the back, which in reality could be used to turn the cap into the wind.

The mill is marked with the second-grade silver mark, year letter V for 1905, and master's mark JV hammer. The Minerva head mark is also stamped.

The miniature is in perfect condition.

Weight: 136 grams. Dimensions: 8 x 8 x 12 cm.
