Frisian silver knife from the end of the 18th century century. The knife is beautifully embossed with two female figures on either side of the handle. Made by the silversmith Ate Jochums Offringa from Huizum, active from 1779.
On one side with a pillar. This can be associated with Clementia (Gentleness). A pillar also stands for strength, durability and steadfastness. On the other side the female figure represents trust with an anchor and a bird together symbolizing an unforced faith. The anchor stands for hope and the bird stands for supernatural freedom.
The knife is crowned by a rider on horseback. The blade comes from Solingen, Germany.
The knife is marked with a master's mark bird (Foot C28) which was used by Ate Offringa.
