Antique umbrella with silver handle (knife handle), Hooijkaas, L. Lewis, 1892

Antique black umbrella with silver handle. The handle is a former Zeeland paeremes with allegorical representation on the handle. The status of the wearer was measured by the knife he carried. Due to the size of that handle one can assume that the wearer had a high status.

The knife handle is marked with 13 (!) silver marks and is therefore an interesting collector's item.

First of all the Dutch pseudo-labels that were used by Hooijkaas and then the English import labels.

The knife has been tested with the ^1st quality mark, standing lion, with key as export mark.

Further approved with LL for Lewis Lewis as importer from London. He was active from 1890 to 1899. In addition the Importkeur F and year letter R for 1892.

Finally, the Minerva head is also chipped off on the handle.

As a crowning glory, a dog was mounted on it. This is missing.

The brand of the umbrella is: Paragon, S. Fox & Co Limited. The umbrella has some wear marks.

A unique English/Dutch umbrella.

The handle has a length of: 14 cm. The umbrella has a length of: 76 cm.
