An exceptionally elegant and rare complete pair of mid-19th-century Dutch table silver: these two antique silver salt spoons from the year 1851.
These refined miniature spoons were crafted by the well-known Amsterdam silversmith Jan Hendrik Eversbag. This is a beautiful matching set in excellent, gleaming condition; a jewel for the china cabinet and an absolute must-have for the collector of fine table silver.
Jan Hendrik Eversbag (active as a master silversmith in Amsterdam between 1840 and 1873) was a highly respected craftsman known for his high-quality large and small silver. His early maker's mark (IE under an anchor) can be found on various sought-after silver pieces from the Biedermeier period. Works from the Eversbag Amsterdam workshop are characterized by their sturdy construction, balanced proportions, and meticulous finish, which is immediately visible even in these tiny salt spoons in the crisp fiddle edges and perfectly symmetrical bowls.

The salt spoons are designed in a tasteful and timeless early Biedermeier style. The handles feature a graceful, spatula-shaped model finished with a crisp double-fiddle edge along the contours. This geometric interplay of lines flows smoothly via a subtly fluted stem into the pointed, egg-shaped bowls, which were specifically designed for perfectly dispensing salt or spices from antique salt cellars.
The back of both stems shows a rich and perfectly clear row of four deeply struck Dutch silver hallmarks (as can be seen in razor-sharp detail in the photos):
  • The sought-after early maker's mark IE under an anchor in a rectangle (Jan Hendrik Eversbag)
  • The date letter R for the year 1851
  • The fineness mark, the Walking Lion with the 2 (for 2nd grade silver, .833)
  • The Minerva head with the letter A (assay office Amsterdam)
