An elegant and rare pair of late 19th-century Dutch antique silver cake forks from the year 1888.
These refined, larger pastry forks were crafted by the well-known Schoonhoven silversmith Wed. A. Kuylenburg. This is a beautiful, uniform set in excellent, gleaming condition; a gem for the china cabinet and an absolute must-have for the connoisseur of antique silver cutlery.
The silversmith workshop of Wed. A. Kuylenburg (active in Schoonhoven between 1882 and 1893) was a respected name in the national silver city during the late 19th century. After the death of silversmith Anthonie Kuylenburg, his widow successfully continued the business. The studio was known for producing high-quality small silver and luxury cutlery, where fashionable elements such as twisted stems and beaded borders were applied by hand with great precision. Works with this specific maker's mark (AK above a star and the workshop number 47) are beloved by collectors for their solid quality and typical Schoonhoven refinement.
The design of these forks is immediately striking due to the harmonious combination of various style elements from the Historicism period. The handles have a clean, geometric model finished all around with a refined, crystal-clear beaded border. The stems are beautifully executed in a twisted design, which provides a dynamic play of light and a very luxurious appearance. Through an elegantly shaped, pointed attachment, the stems transition into three long, slender tines. Thanks to the solid silver weight of 43.4 grams for the set, the forks feel wonderfully sturdy and comfortable in the hand.
The back of both handles shows a rich and exceptionally clear row of four deeply struck Dutch silver hallmarks (as can be seen razor-sharp in the macro photo):
  • The maker's mark AK above a star and the number 47 in a square (Wed. A. Kuylenburg)
  • The date letter D for the year 1888
  • The purity mark, the Walking Lion with the 2 (for 2nd grade silver, .833)
  • The Minerva head with the letter M (assay office Schoonhoven)
