An elegant, characterful and rarely complete pair of late 19th-century Dutch silverware: these two antique silver serving forks (meat forks) from the year 1870.
This magnificent duo was crafted by the highly esteemed Amsterdam master silversmith Willem Frederik Schuss. The forks are in fantastic, shiny condition and form a brilliant adornment for the china cabinet or the exclusively set dinner table.
Willem Frederik Schuss was a highly respected gold and silversmith active in Amsterdam between 1867 and 1883. Within the Amsterdam silver trade, Schuss was known for his excellent eye for proportion and his specialization in heavier, high-quality table cutlery and serving utensils. His workshop combined traditional craftsmanship robustness with the then highly fashionable and refined engraving styles of the Biedermeier and Historicism period. Works with his characteristic maker's mark (a diagonally placed ship's anchor above the initials WS) are favored by collectors due to their durability and the sublime quality of the handcrafted engraving.

The design immediately stands out due to the lavishly worked, wide handles in a rich Dutch Neo-style. The front of the curved stems features clean double fillet edges, fine stippling, and an elegantly engraved leaf-shaped cartouche. The transition to the three long, razor-sharp tines is decorated with a gracefully chiseled shield motif. The back of the handles is smoothly finished and features a beautiful, razor-sharp hand-engraved monogram 'ME' in elegant script. With a solid total weight of 56.5 grams, the forks feel wonderfully heavy and comfortable in the hand.
The reverse shows a rich and perfectly clear row of four deeply struck Dutch silver hallmarks (clearly visible in the macro photo):
  • The sought-after maker's mark Diagonal anchor above WS in a square (Willem Frederik Schuss)
  • The fineness mark, the Walking Lion with the 2 (for 2nd grade silver, .833)
  • The Minerva head (assay office of Amsterdam, here partly worn/illegibly struck)
  • The date letter L for the year 1870
