An exceptionally elegant, solid, and rarely complete pair of late 19th-century Frisian table silver: these two antique silver serving forks (meat forks) from the year 1890.
This beautiful matching set was crafted by the Sneek master silversmith Johannes Schijfsma Jr. The forks are in fantastic, gleaming antique condition with a wonderful patina and constitute an exclusive enrichment for any antique silver collection or luxuriously set dinner table.
Johannes Schijfsma Jz. (Johannes, son of Jouke) was a highly skilled Frisian gold- and silversmith who was active for most of the 19th century. Although the hallmarks were registered through the head office in Leeuwarden (Minerva head F), he maintained his own workshops in the famous Frisian water sports village of Woudsend and later in the silver city of Sneek (active between 1848 and 1889).
Schijfsma Jz. was known in the region for his excellent quality small silver, including detailed silver spoons, serving utensils, and cutlery pieces with refined bead edges. His works are a wonderful example of the rich, small-scale Frisian silversmithing tradition outside the Frisian capital.
The design immediately stands out due to the tasteful combination of artisanal sturdiness and refined details in the Dutch neo-style. The smoothly polished, ergonomically shaped handles are edged all around with a pristine, deep bead edge. The stems are executed in a beautiful twisted model, which provides a dynamic play of light. Through a wide junction, the stems transition into three sturdy, elegantly curved tines specifically designed for the stylish serving of fine cold cuts, cheese, or hors d'oeuvres.
Thanks to the solid total weight of no less than 60 grams, the forks feel wonderfully heavy and comfortable in the hand.
The reverse of both handles shows a rich and exceptionally clear, deeply struck row of four official Dutch silver hallmarks (as can be seen crystal-clearly in the macro photo):
  • The maker's mark JS above 189 in a square (Johannes Schijfsma Jr., Leeuwarden)
  • The year letter F for the year 1890
  • The fineness mark, the Walking Lion with the 2 (for 2nd grade silver, .833)
  • The Minerva head with the letter F (the Leeuwarden assay office)
