This exceptional, museum-grade set of antique silver porridge or soup spoons (paplepels) is a breathtaking masterpiece from the 18th century.
Crafted in the year 1778, this pair reflects pure artisan craftsmanship from the golden age of Utrecht city silver. The spoons are executed in a sleek and elegant model with a deep, generous egg-shaped bowl and a subtly curved, smooth handle. This creates a minimalist, monumental, and extremely luxurious aesthetic that beautifully highlights the pure quality of the high-grade silver.
With a generous length of 26 cm and a substantial total weight of no less than 237.5 grams (118 and 119.5 grams), the spoons feel very solid and heavy. This skillfully forged set is very rare and furthermore features impeccably clear hallmarks on the back of the handle. The stamps show the master's mark DE, the date letter T for 1778, and the Utrecht city hallmark (the divided shield) twice, which at the time guaranteed the highest Dutch silver quality: the high grade of 934/1000.
Dirk Egeling was a highly prominent and respected Utrecht silversmith, active in the period from 1756 to 1799. Egeling was known for his refined household silverware and luxury utensils for the affluent bourgeoisie. His work is characterized by sleek, harmonious lines that perfectly mark the transition from the exuberant Rococo to the more restrained Neoclassicism. Objects from his hand are today sought-after and highly valued collector's items within the Dutch silver heritage.

The term 'breilepel' (porridge spoon) historically refers directly to "brij", the thick porridge that was a staple food for the general population at the time. These spoons were specifically designed with a deep, wide bowl to substantially scoop and serve thick porridges and pearl barley. Silver porridge spoons of this size and weight were valuable possessions in an 18th-century household and served not only a practical purpose but were also an important status symbol on the tables of wealthy families.
