2 Silver butter knives with carnelian handles, made by silversmith Jacob Kooiman. He was a skilled silversmith, active in the Dutch silver city of Schoonhoven. His company used the maker's mark JK1 (or variants) in the period from 1881 to 1893, after which his son Andries Cornelis took over.

Carnelian is a semi-precious stone with a characteristic warm red to orange-brown color. Cutting this stone into a sleek, fitting handle was purely manual work.

Such fine silver serving pieces with semi-precious stone handles (such as agate or carnelian) were a luxury status item for the high-tea or breakfast table at the time.

The knives are hallmarked with the sword mark for at least 2nd grade silver and the maker's mark JK1.

They are in good condition.

Weight: 41.7 grams. Length: 16 cm.
