Hij stond bekend om zijn kwalitatief hoogwaardige gebruiksvoorwerpen en verfijnd schepwerk, zoals suikertangen, theeschepjes en strooilepels. Zijn werkplaats hanteerde het meesterteken met de initialen MVL onder het nummer 97 in een vierkant. Van Leeuwen werkte in de bloeiperiode van de Nederlandse Biedermeier-stijl, wat duidelijk herkenbaar is aan de combinatie van fijn zaagwerk (ajour) en de rijk gegraveerde, zware grepen die zijn zilverwerk sieren. De binnenzijde van de bak is voorzien van een fijn, handmatig uitgezaagd ajourpatroon met een centraal zonnemotief (of spaakmotief), geometrische patronen en kleine sterretjes. De rand van de bak is versierd met een subtiele gravure van acanthusbladeren en krulwerk.
