It is also hallmarked with the Minerva head P for Alkmaar. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThe origin of this building dates back to the 14th century. The Weigh House was originally built as a Holy Spirit Almshouse with a chapel. The almshouse served as a hospital for the poor, and pilgrims could stay overnight there during their journeys. The building was converted into a Weigh House in the 16th century.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThis prominent building owes its appearance to the events of 1573, when the Spanish army surrounded the city. The inhabitants starved, but with the courage of despair, they managed to defeat the army.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eAs a reward, Alkmaar was granted weighing rights. The city was now allowed to charge weighing fees for all goods entering from outside. Alkmaar flourished as a market town. The old chapel became a market building and weigh house, with large weighing scales. These are still used for cheese. The weigh house became a showpiece of the city.
